Data Communication – The Lifeblood of Digital Networks

Data communication is essential to our ever-growing digital world. Understanding how different types of data transmission function is key to creating reliable and efficient networks. Different methods determine how data is transmitted.

Hardware in a data communication circuit can employ a variety to efficiently transmit data. These include desmultiplexing and multiplexing. These are processes that combine or separate signals, and then send them as a composite signal. This increases bandwidth and reduces costs. Signal amplifiers and error-detecting codes reduce data corruption due to electrical or mechanical disturbances.

Data communications also come with rules (protocol) that are followed by the computers of the sender and receiver. These rules ensure that the message will be received and understood.

The sender is the computer or device that generates and transmits the message. It could be in the form of text, numbers pictures, sounds, or video. The computer or device that receives the message could be different from the one that sent it. The transmission medium is the physical path from the sender to the receiver, which can be a wired media such as twisted pair wire fiber optic cable or wireless, such as lasers, microwaves, radio waves.
